Fire and smoke safety is frequently disregarded in businesses yet is absolutely vital to the health and safety of your staff and premises. Our fire marshal / Waking Watch services are imperative to keeping your environment safe, reducing fire risks, and responding and evacuating swiftly and safely in the occurrence of a fire.

At Security Guards UK, our dedicated fire marshals are specifically trained in fire safety and executing safe evacuations. Before implementing our fire marshal services, we assess your business, carry out risk assessments and draft up fire Evacuation strategies. After that, we will draw up a bespoke fire marshal action plan for your building.

The regular, day-to-day duties of the fire marshal will be based on the fire risk assessment but they will usually comprise of the testing of all the fire alarms; ensuring that all of the emergency exits are clear, fire extinguishers are fully operational and in date and that fire safety signs are visible; making sure that electrical items are PAT tested and certified and also attending fire drills regularly so that people in the building are aware of the process in case of a fire emergency. Our fire marshals / Waking Watch service carry out foot patrols regularly and maintain the necessary paperwork to ensure fire checks are undertaken frequently. They monitor the storage and removal of any hazardous materials on site in order to reduce the risk of any fires or explosions.

On a day to day basis, fire marshals have the responsibility to ensure that the environment they are assigned to is safe in case of a fire. They must ensure that:

  • All Fire Doors and Fire Exits are closed, clear, unlocked and ready for use.
  • All escape routes are unblocked and lead to a safe zone
  • There are fire safety signs clearly in position
  • Fire alarms are clear and unobstructed.
  • Checking that emergency exit lighting is operational.
  • All persons with disabilities are aided in the event of an evacuation.
  • Note and report hazards to the ‘responsible person’
  • Record all details in a logbook
  • Report any concerns to the ‘responsible person’ for the building or call 999

In the event of a fire, our operatives are trained to know what to do and how to execute evacuations in a calm, professional manner. They have been trained to:

  • Respond to fire alarm systems
  • Call the emergency services
  • Alerting residents within 10-15 minutes of operation of a smoke alarm
  • Evacuate people from the area involved via practised routes
  • Ensure that anyone who is pregnant or with disabilities are appropriately assisted
  • Conduct a floor sweep to ensure no one is left behind
  • Knocking on each flat door and/ or using air horns to alert residents
  • Make themselves visible at the assembly point
